Ma Lin’s painting from the Song Dynasty (13th century) depicts a scholar seated under a pine tree listening to the sound of the pine needles brushing against the wind. I love this work because it shows beauty as a (spiritual) state of being. A peaceful mind reflects a purity that allows us to witness life in a more intimate and fine way.
